I purchased a copy of the documentary, ‘Water’s Journey - The Hidden Rivers of Florida’ several years ago. It showed what lay beneath HWY 441 and therestaurants and hotels in Alachua. Under the asphalt road and down where thestorm drains and trash go are beautiful underwater caves. Not only did I learn ofthe beauty of this place but also the importance of it as most of our drinking watercomes from the Floridan aquifer. It is shocking to know that trash not properlydisposed can end up down here and Wes Skiles did his best to show the people ofthe world this natural place and preserve it for our future. In late July 2010 Wes Skiles, a world renowned underwater filmmaker andphotographer died at the age of 52, scuba diving in South Florida while finishingan assignment for National Geographic. He was a native of Jacksonville but hisheart was always at Ginnie Springs. As a young boy he visited the Springs and hislove of the area grew into a profound passion for underwater cave photographyand film making and a love of nature. |

Originally this area was inhabited by Seminole Indians, it had large Live Oak trees and the Indians named it Alachua meaning "sink". In 1824 the Seminoles were moved to a reservation. In 1826 roads, stores and a post office were completed. By 1905 the city once known as Newnasville was officially incorporated and the total population was 526. If you look at these old photographs and then look at Alachua today you can just imagine how it used to be as many of these building have survived. Of course back then Main Street was a tree lined dirt road that was packed with wagons on Saturday mornings. You can drive around Alachua today and see many intact Victorian homes all built at the turn of the century, some are private homes while others like the Ivy House have been turned into businesses. The City of Alachua has kept its old charm and remains 'The Good Life Community'. |

From Hollywood to Beautiful Main Street, Alachua |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Have you ever wondered what people did before you met them? Did they do anything exciting before settling down in historic Alachua? Take the case for Alachua resident Joe Meyer. When people pass Joe on Main Street in Alachua, all they may see is the owner of EverReady Tree Service and the owner of a restored Victorian white house named the “Meyer House”. But what they do not know is that Joe is actually a Karate Master that has done more in his life than most dream of. |
