The holidays are fast approaching and we are entering one of the busiest seasons of the year. For some people, Thanksgiving and Christmas represent a time of families getting together, laughing, sharing, opening gifts and making memories. Yet for others, it is a time of great loneliness and sadness. Some have no families to enjoy the holiday with, may be suffering from an illness, a loss of a loved one, or may be under great financial pressure.

The family of The Rock of Gainesville wants to encourage people this year to reach out to those who may be lonely or hurting and include them in some of your family gatherings or look for practical ways to help.

One example is a new tradition that The Rock of Gainesville began last year. Families from The Rock opened up their homes and shared their Thanksgiving meals and traditions with University of Florida International Students. These young people were not returning back to their home countries during the holiday and had never before experienced this great American tradition. 56 local families participated and hosted just over 150 students. Not only did the students learn about the traditional foods eaten on this holiday, but friendships were made that continue to this day.

“We interviewed them as much as they interviewed us,” chuckled Ellen Weintraub, host of three Chinese students. Chris Harrell, a single grandmother who hosted students from China, remarked, “I wanted to share the love and warmth our family and close friends enjoy when we’re together. We had lots of fun playing games, laughing and exchanging information about the different cultures. The girls were so grateful and as they were leaving, they kept running back to get one last hug.”

Fabian Chapov, College Pastor at The Rock says, “It was a huge success and we’re doing it all over again this year!” The college ministry birthed this outreach.

“This is just one example of how to reach out to our community,” states George Brantley, Sr. Pastor at The Rock. “Everyone has something to offer….a smile, a hug, a gift, a word of encouragement. We hope you will join us in reaching out to those who are suffering or are lonely at this time of year.”

Or it could be a grandmother wondering why she can’t pick up her grandchildren without urinary leakage.
