Newberry’s Backyard Barbecue invited Newberry High School football players, cheerleaders, and band members to a free barbecue buffet to celebrate the 2007 football season. The Newberry City Commission allowed for Main Street to be blocked off from 6:00 until 7:30 for a Public Pep Rally/Block Party. It was an awesome celebration for a team truly deserving the recognition.

Newberry High School is the home of Alachua County’s only undefeated football team this season. The last time NHS achieved a perfect record was in 1967. The Panthers also won the District Class 2B Title. With the guidance of their coach Tommy Keeler, the Panthers worked hard in the State Playoffs that recently took place at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando against the undefeated Pahokee team. Unfortunately the Panthers were defeated. This was the Panthers first district championship since 1998.

If all of that is not enough, the players are true student-athletes. They work as hard in the classroom as they do on the playing field. The team’s average grade point average for the first nine weeks exceeds 3.0. According to Hershel Lyons, Principal of Newberry High School, “Our football players have a set a high standard of excellence. Their outstanding sportsmanship, academic excellence, and athletic ability have set an example for the rest of our student body.”

The citizens of Newberry applauded their efforts in big way on a beautiful Fall evening. It was a night the students will not soon forget.
