When I sat down and talked to Dr. Paivi Samant is was clear to me that she is not only interested in the outcome of the appearance of the patient’s teeth but also the correctness of the bite so that the patient will feel comfortable. Some of Samant Dental Groups clients come in with severe dental problems that to the average person seem impossible to fix. These patients don’t have just a cavity to fill but rather a whole mouth makeover and this is where Dr. Samant’s years of expertise come into play.
The warm and friendly team at Samant Dental Group are just as devoted to well being of the patient as is the doctor. This practice offers not only cosmetic dentistry procedures, such as bonding, tooth whitening, and veneers, but also prosthetic dentistry including crowns, implants, partial and full dentures. In addition to all of the above, they can provide implant supported dentures for those patients unable to tolerate traditional dentures. Patients are also assisted with solutions and remedies for sleep apnea/snoring, and potentially painful, hard to treat TMJ problems.
Before moving to Gainesville, Dr. Paivi “Anne” Samant was a fulltime Assistant Professor at the University of Tennessee in Memphis. While specializing in prosthodontics, Dr. Samant received
several awards for her research in dental biofilm chemistry. Prosthodontics is a three year specialty training in all areas of restorative dentistry, including cosmetic dentistry, veneers, crown and bridge work, removable prosthesis, dentures and dental implants. Dr. Samant also holds a Masters degree in speech and language pathology. She continues to teach at the University of Florida on a part time basis.
The Samant Dental Group believes it is essential to treat the whole patient, rather than just addressing their dental and oral issues. By gauging and assessing the most appropriate protocol for each individual case, it is not only a matter of just covering up a less than perfect smile with a “quick fix”. Each individual patient is evaluated according to their particular needs, and the treatment is designed considering time factors, costs and patient’s expectations. Patients are advised as to the various options that are available to them, which means detailing all options from the most conservative treatment plan all the way through to the most extensive plan. Sometimes the
treatment options will involve other specialists such as endodontists, oral surgeons, orthodontists, periodontists, or in some cases, all of the above. Obviously, given some scenarios, these treatments can require a considerable time investment, but to have a long-term result, it is essential that these therapies not be rushed. The Samant Dental Group realizes that not everyone can do all phases of treatment at once, and so will customize the plan that the best results can be achieved in a manner acceptable to the patient.
Dr. Samant and her caring staff know that they are creating more than just a better smile; they are helping build the foundation for a lifetime of healthy teeth, which will keep everyone smiling for many years to come. Most dental technicians can rapidly create a pretty smile with cosmetic covers, but cosmetic dentistry is certainly not a production line industry churning out overnight results. Adequate time and realistic expectations require planning and assessment of each individual patient’s specific needs. Even in this age of instant gratification, it is not realistic to expect long lasting results while at the same time avoiding future complications when it comes to dental
care. Longevity is a key when addressing restorative procedures, especially when calculating the time and costs involved, and inherent future maintenance factors.
While retaining the existing teeth is paramount, there may come a time when dentures or implant supported overdentures are needed. Dr. Samant can provide these services and make the dentures look so natural no one would know they are there. Their laboratory utilizes all the newest and up to date materials and technology. Other cases may need to employ the implant restoration procedure to provide
support for a denture, or to offer a permanent replacement of teeth that may have been lost due to trauma or accident.
Being a specialist in prosthodontics, Dr. Samant also treats sleep apnea patients with sleep physicians, providing oral appliance therapy to patients who cannot tolerate CPAP (continuous positive air pressure) therapy. Although normally harmless, snoring, which is the result of partially obstructed breathing during sleep, can also be a sign of a more serious medical condition know as Obstructive Sleep Apnea. When OSA occurs, the tongue and soft palate collapse on to the back of the throat and completely block the airway. Standard remedies such as exercise and weight loss may assist in reducing the difficulty but as an alternate remedy, Oral Appliance Therapy is
available at Samant Dental Group.
