The holiday season is fast approaching, and with it comes additional costs related to gifts, trips and dinner parties. But how many of us have considered the extra costs associated with powering our holiday decorations? Lights are traditional décor during the holiday season, but for those who enjoy a large display, the cost, can be more than $50 over the season. However, making energy-efficient lighting choices can help keep holiday electricity costs low.

Many people use mini-light strands, which are made up of small interchangeable glass bulbs and are one of the least expensive forms of stringed lighting. Approximately 123 million mini-light strands are purchased each year. A 100-bulb mini-light strand uses 40 watts per hour. If left on for eight hours a day for one month, the energy used totals 9.6-kilowatt hours (kWh). At GRU’s current average electric rate of $0.11 per kWh, one strand of mini-lights costs around $1.06 per month.

While $1.06 per month seems low, there is an even less expensive option. Light Emitting Diode (LED) holiday lights use only one-tenth of the electricity of a strand of mini-lights—only 0.04 watts per bulb. This adds up to only 0.96 kWh per month—a mere $0.11 per month per 100-bulb strand!

Most LED lights are encased in plastic, not glass, making these lights more durable and shatter-resistant, which is ideal for use in higher-humidity areas such as north central Florida.

The initial purchase price of LED lights is higher than other forms of stringed lighting, averaging $12 - $16 per 100-bulb strand. However, most manufacturers guarantee them for five years and suggest that they may last the average consumer 20 holiday seasons. LED holiday lights are available at most local hardware and department stores.

“The longer lifespan combined with the lower energy use makes these lights a wise long-term investment,” said Amy Carpus, GRU Conservation Analyst.

The number of light strands used around the home can add up quickly. Planning your lighting needs and limiting use are key to reducing your holiday lighting costs. Also, using LED lights can significantly decrease the impact of holiday lighting on your utility bill.
