Fashion News for Summer 2019

by Trish Utter

Did you see the Met Gala? The event was held at the famous New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, hence the name, Met Gala. This event started in 1948 and is the biggest fundraising fashion event of the year. It raises money for the Met’s Costume Institute. The 2019 theme was “Camp,” which was inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay that defines camp as “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.” And in true Hollywood style the stars dazzled us with outrageous costumes on the red carpet. We saw a lot eye popping color and glitter, and this will be reflected in the stores for your summer of 2019 wardrobe.

You will be shocked to know that the 1980’s Laura Ashley style florals are back, along with big puffy sleeves and…shoulder pads! Hmm, memories of Dallas and Dynasty days are ahead!

I also hate to break it to you, but the 1990 punk rock style, neon colors, mixed with a splash of animal print and/or polka dots is also back! The idea is to mix the floral prints with a solid block of color. So a flowery skirt can be paired with a lime green shirt.

Yellow will be one of the years most dominant colors for the season. Great for brunettes…. not so great for blondes. As a rule of thumb, if you have dark hair, bright colors accentuate your natural coloring. If you are blonde, dark or pastel colors accent your hair better.

Personally, I like block colors, meaning I like everything to be the same color from top to bottom as it is very body flattering. If you are on the short side block colors can give you the appearance of seeming taller. A great way to use the new fashion trend is to accent with a floral or animal print belt or a colorful accessory. The great news here is that you can style the season to your own taste.

According to Harpers Bazaar and fashion expert Sarah Baum at Macy’s, the 1960’s tie-dye is back with a vengeance. High-end designers like Prada and Stella McCartney have had it in their collection on the run-way since last year, using tie-dye in flowing dresses and skirts. Tie-dye has become a little more sophisticated.

High waisted pants are back! No more bulging over your low rise jeans girls! And skinny jeans are out, floral embroidered, baggy denim is in, and distressed cut off-shorts are still rocking it. Speaking of denim, a must have this year is a denim skirt. It can be worn casually with a T shirt or glitzed up with a silk camisole.

If you want a conservative swim suit you are in luck as now it is all the trend to wear a one piece bathing suit that has long sleeves. They come in all different colors and are very flattering to every body shape and size.

Go out there and make a big splash this summer with vivid colors, florals and animal prints. If you are visiting New York I highly recommend a visit to the Met and view their fashion exhibit.

Be unique, and revel in being YOU!
