Optimist Club Comes to Alachua

by Ruth Ward

A new dynamic service organization has come to Alachua. Officially chartering in March the Optimist Club comes with a local focus of Optimism and service to our local community. With a core group of founding members the local Optimist Club of Alachua is focused on kids, community projects, and positive impact to the local community.

“A Service club should be local focused” Joe Hancock from Union Home Mortgage, one of the founding members says. “We all have busy lives, but we want to give back to our local community. Our club will give the busy individual the opportunity to volunteer locally, network with other professionals, enjoy positive self improvement, all without absorbing a lot of your time. We are a little unconventional when it comes to your traditional service club. We will be laser focused on our local projects to get them done rapidly and efficiently along with short to the point virtual meetings in addition to the ability to have, ‘Happy Hour’ style meetings to allow those who have busy schedules to still participate in meetings they would normally not be able to attend. No wasted time.” Joe says.

The Optimist Club of Alachua plans to engage local schools and community groups to bring positive programs forward to help our local youth. As the club identifies areas of need they plan to draw up an action plan and accomplish the task.

Optimist International has a number of International projects that the local Optimist club plans to bring to Alachua such as the Junior Golf Tournament, Scholarship Programs, Junior Optimist, Respect for Law, Internet Safety, Community events, and more.

The Optimist Club operates by the tenets of the Optimist Creed.
