My Top Picks for Las Vegas

by Trish Utter

Vegas-Strip_WEBThis was the first time we had visited Las Vegas and we had a blast. The airport is right next to the city making the trip to the ‘Strip’ stress free and easy. As you come in for a landing you immediately see the oasis of landmark hotels surrounded by the natural beauty and wilderness of the land.

Pink Jeep Tours

Pink-Jeep-Tours_WEBWhen I arrive in a new place I like to get my bearings by going on a tour. Pink Jeep Tours pick guests up right from their hotel. These pink Jeeps are high up off the ground. Passengers sit in luxury as the tour guide comments on the sights. The first trip we did with them was their Las Vegas City Tour.

The Strip sparkled with lights as we passed all the amazing hotels. We stopped at the famous ‘Welcome to Las Vegas’ sign and visited the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop from the TV show ‘Pawn Stars’ and had a light dinner nearby. Then we got to spend time on Fremont Street that has thousands of lights strung across it making you feel as if you are in a glittering tunnel. Here we watched street performers and had our pictures taken with show girls and impersonators. I was surprised at how clean and orderly Vegas is. I could not believe we had seen so much in only our first day.

Red Rock Canyon Tour

Red-Rock-Colt-&-Brooke_WEBYou can’t go to Vegas without noticing the majestic mountains that surround you and Pink Jeep Tours can take you out there too. We went out on the Red Rock Canyon Tour. In just 30 minutes we were off-roading over the red volcanic rock. It’s as if the rock was squeezed from a tube of toothpaste as you can see where the rock formation had folded. This oversized jeep went down a road that I would not dream of taking my 4 wheel drive. There were huge rocks the jeep went over on the twisting rocky trail with no one in sight. We stopped to take some photos and take in the breathtaking scenery. What a contrast to the ‘glam’ of the city.

R? R? Las Vegas

Ri-Ra_WEBLocated on the Strip at Mandalay Bay is a unique Irish pub called R? R? Las Vegas. The owners brought the pub piece by piece over from Ireland. Not only does it look good but the food is something that even Chef Gordon Ramsay would be proud of.Fish-n-Chips, Bangers and Mash and other authentic Irish food is cooked to perfection and comes in large enough portions to share. Live Irish music fills the air and one of the largest Whiskey collections in the world is offered to customers. I would highly recommend stopping here for a pint and for a relaxing break from the Strip.

Papillon Grand

Canyon-West_WEBPapillon offers a labyrinth of tour choices. From Helicopter tours of the Vegas Strip, Grand Canyon West Rim Bus tours, Grand Canyon Airplane and rafting tours, Canyon Smooth River Water trips and many, many more. They will also pick guests up from their hotel.

We chose to take the Grand Canyon West Tour. Now how do I paint a picture for you in words of the most spectacular scenery on earth? We flew over the Hoover Dam, my camera clicking away constantly. There it was…the Grand Canyon and how grand it is. The rock formation here is the opposite of Red Rock Canyon as it is all sliced rock as if it had been cut like a loaf of bread. The helicopter banked right and then down into the Canyon and landed on a shelf. I felt as if I was meeting Robin Leach from the show ‘Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous.’ A gazebo and picnic baskets with champagne awaited us. The sun was setting and the colors of the light on the reddish brown rock constantly changed. We saw another helicopter land in the distance and a couple were being married…..how jaw dropping romantic is that –Papillon can arrange weddings too!

You can’t grasp the vastness of it from a mere photo, you can’t hear the total silence, and you can’t feel the crisp fresh air from just reading this. But I hope it will inspire you to go out there and make this Number One on your bucket list as it was the most exciting experience I have ever had.

Vegas! The Show

Colt-and-the-Showgirls_WEBLocated in the Saxe Theatre at Planet Hollywood, this show is the best depiction of Vegas and one of the biggest productions on the Strip. Simply put, this is First class entertainment that even my teens enjoyed. Reminiscent of the spectacular Ziegfeld Follies this show kept us entertained from beginning to end. The Rat Pack, juggling, comedy, history, magic, show girls in glittering costumes, live orchestra, this show has it all.

Fashion Show Mall

Shop till you drop! One of the nation’s largest malls featuring seven major department stores. One store you should not miss is Boot Star. They have a huge selection of beautifully hand crafted cowboy boots, some even have rhinestones just so you can be like the Rhinestone Cowboy!
